The carry around camera
February 5, 2012 | Posted By: SDR
We often get asked by people which cameras to buy, and usually these questions seem to relate to entry level dSLR or point-and-shoot cameras. To be honest, we have no idea on either of them.
Asked what we carry, and why – the answer is simple. Canon G-series (I use a G11 and Gary uses the newer G12) cameras are the only choice. Professional build quality, optics and handling make them superb companions for our usage. Mostly a great camera to use on shoots as a behind-the-scenes machine for snaps, it was also our staple location recce camera (now superseded by the awesome iPhone due to compass and GPS tagging).
Highly recommended, I thought I’d post about it as we embark on a new era soon with our G1x replacement.

SA Fashion Week Reportback
September 28, 2011 | Posted By: SDR
Sorry for the late report back, but let’s just say we’re better at shooting pictures than typing words!
For our 10th season of SA Fashion Week photography, we went all out. Every show’s photographs went live within 45min of show completion, and every look was edited and tweaked before upload. We were pretty exhausted having literally just flown in from London Fashion Week that very morning, but with all the media and bloggers wanting images, we had to deliver.
It was also the first time at a Fashion Week that Gary shot ramp head-on. Best known for his creative wides, the beauty of not being official photographer gave the team an opportunity to experiment and Gary to get more experience. That said, the outcome was as expected – perfect. Although we were not official for SAFW, we had almost 70% of show’s designers contact us directly to shoot their shows for them, and based on a quick look at blogs so far, we’ve provided almost 100% of online photographic coverage.
Thats it! You can see all the pics at: SDR RAMP SERVER

London Fashion Week Reportback
September 22, 2011 | Posted By: SDR
Just returned from our 3rd season of shooting London Fashion Week. By far our busiest season yet, shooting over 24 shows (20 officially) and also, for the first time, being lighting director on 4 shows.
London is a completely different beast to the way we work in South Africa, requiring Simon to be self-sufficient, but a great test-bed for refining our South African workflows for speed and efficiency. As usual, we utilise a Canon 7D setup (with custom Picture Style based on client required “feel”) with 70-200 F2.8 lenses, and occasionally a 1.4x converter for the larger venues such as TopShop venue back at our favourite location, The old Waterloo Eurostar Terminal.
It was also a time to attend a few functions for the first time and relax, invites we usually turn down! First up was a ball at South Africa House on Trafalgar Square which launched the Ubuntu Project, an exciting collection of designers showing under the Ubuntu “brand” in their own show. A great night out meeting lots of interesting people. Second up was a personal (guest) invitation to attend the Burberry show in Hyde Park. It was strange to attend as a guest, but was fantastic to absorb the production, set and technical, which really was fantastic.
The above image is from the Ubuntu Show rehearsal. It was fantastic to have been involved in this initiative, and we’re already looking forward to February next year when the designers return to start building their followers and buyer base.
